B58 Common Modifications
Recommended hardware upgrades for the BMW B58 platform. These modifications support increased power levels and improve reliability.
Always research thoroughly before purchasing modifications. Quality varies significantly between brands. When in doubt, consult with experienced tuners or the community.
Upgraded Intakes
Upgraded intakes allow more airflow to the turbocharger, reduce heat soak, and increase induction sound. The B58 responds well to intake upgrades, especially when tuned.
Recommendations:
- -Eventuri Carbon Intake
- -aFe Momentum Intake
- -BMS Performance Intake
- -Dinan High Flow Intake
Quality construction matters. Look for intakes with proper MAF housing and heat shielding. Carbon fiber intakes offer superior heat resistance.
Upgraded Heat Exchanger / Chargecooler
The B58 uses an integrated air-to-water intercooler (chargecooler) in the intake manifold. Upgraded heat exchangers improve cooling capacity and reduce intake air temperatures.
Recommendations:
- -CSF High-Performance Heat Exchanger
- -Wagner Tuning Competition Heat Exchanger
- -Upgraded low-temperature radiator (LTR)
- -Upgraded chargecooler pump for better coolant flow
The air-to-water system is efficient but can heat soak during sustained high-load driving. Upgraded heat exchangers are essential for track use.
Upgraded Charge Pipes
The stock charge pipes are plastic and prone to cracking under increased boost pressure. Aluminium charge pipes are essential for any tuned B58.
Recommendations:
- -Aluminium charge pipe kit
- -Upgraded silicone couplers with quality clamps
- -VRSF, BMS, or Mishimoto charge pipe kits
This is a critical reliability upgrade. Stock charge pipes can fail suddenly, causing boost leaks and potential damage.
Downpipe & Exhaust
The factory downpipe is restrictive. Upgraded downpipes reduce backpressure, improve turbo spool, and unlock additional power especially when combined with a tune.
Recommendations:
- -Catless downpipe for maximum flow (off-road use)
- -High-flow catted downpipe for emissions compliance
- -VRSF, ARM, or Evolution Racewerks downpipes
- -4" diameter recommended for higher power applications
A tune is required to prevent CEL codes with catless downpipes. Consider full turbo-back exhaust for best results.
Oil Catch Can
Direct injection engines like the B58 are prone to carbon buildup on intake valves. Catch cans help prevent oil vapors from contaminating the intake.
Recommendations:
- -Baffled catch can with drain valve
- -Mishimoto, JLT, or Burger Motorsports catch cans
- -Regular emptying required
Helps prevent carbon buildup. Without a catch can, periodic walnut blasting may be needed.
Spark Plugs
Proper spark plug selection and gapping is critical for tuned applications to prevent misfires.
Recommendations:
- -Stock spark plugs: NGK 95770 (SILZKGR8D8S)
- -Gap to ~0.022-0.024 inches for tuned applications
- -Consider upgraded coil packs for high boost applications
Running smaller gaps reduces spark plug service life but helps prevent misfires under boost.
Fuel System Upgrades
Fuel system upgrades are essential for higher power builds and ethanol (E85) applications. The B58 stock fuel system is quite capable, but upgrades are needed for big turbo and heavy E85 use.
Low Pressure Fuel Pump (LPFP)
The stock B58 LPFP is capable but can be upgraded for higher power E85 applications. Stock pump supports moderate E85 use.
Recommendations:
- -Stock LPFP is adequate for most applications
- -Walbro 450/460 LPH fuel pump for high power E85
- -Walbro 525 LPH for extreme E85 applications
- -BMP or Fuel-It! LPFP upgrade kits
High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)
The B58 HPFP (HDP6) is robust and supports significant power. Upgraded HPFPs are available for extreme builds.
Recommendations:
- -Stock HDP6 HPFP supports substantial power
- -Spool Performance FX-Series HPFP for extreme builds
- -Dorch HPFP upgrades
- -Upgraded HPFP recommended for big turbo E85 builds
Fuel Injectors
Stock B58 injectors (Piezo) are capable and support significant power. Upgrades needed only for extreme builds.
Recommendations:
- -Stock injectors are adequate for most tuned applications
- -Upgraded injectors required for big turbo E85 builds
- -Port injection is an option for extreme builds
