N2x Common Modifications

Recommended hardware upgrades for the BMW N20 and N26 platform. These modifications support increased power levels and improve reliability.

Always research thoroughly before purchasing modifications. Quality varies significantly between brands and poor-quality parts can cause damage. When in doubt, consult with experienced tuners or the community.

Upgraded Intakes

Upgraded intakes are beneficial as you go up the modification path as they are less prone to heat soak and cracking/damage, allow more air to feed into your turbo, and increase intake sound.

Recommendations:

  • -Injen Evolution Intake System
  • -Mishimoto Performance Air Intake System

Research before purchasing to avoid problematic intakes. Quality construction and proper fitment are essential.

Upgraded Turbo Inlets

Stock turbo inlets commonly fail and cause issues with the car stalling or triggering CEL codes. Upgrading to a solid metal inlet minimizes connection points and reduces the risk of leaks.

Recommendations:

  • -Solid metal inlet pipes
  • -Silicone coupler upgrades

A critical reliability upgrade that prevents boost leaks and vacuum issues.

Upgraded Intercoolers

Bigger intercoolers reduce intake air temperatures, allowing for more consistent power and reduced risk of knock. Size selection depends on your bumper type.

Recommendations:

  • -Sport/Luxury bumper: 5-5.5 inch intercooler
  • -M-Sport bumper: 6-9 inch intercooler
  • -Bar and plate construction preferred for FMIC

Ensure proper fitment with your bumper style. Larger is generally better, but must fit your application.

Upgraded Charge Pipes

The stock charge pipe system is weak and prone to cracking under high boost and various heat cycles. Upgraded metal charge pipes prevent boost leaks.

Recommendations:

  • -Aluminum or stainless steel charge pipes
  • -Upgraded silicone couplers
  • -High-quality hose clamps

Consider upgrading hose clamps regardless of which charge pipe you choose.

Upgraded Diverter Valve / BOV

The ability to release excess boost pressure is important for system longevity. The stock diverter valve is plastic and can fail under increased boost.

Recommendations:

  • -Upgraded piston-style DVs
  • -Upgraded diaphragm DVs

Upgraded DVs prevent breaking due to the plastic construction of the stock unit. Essential for tuned applications.

Oil Catch Can

Catch cans help prevent carbon buildup in the intake ports. Direct injection engines are particularly susceptible to carbon buildup.

Recommendations:

  • -Baffled catch can designs
  • -Regular maintenance/emptying required

Without a catch can, you may need walnut blasting to remove carbon deposits and restore engine performance.

Spark Plugs

Proper spark plug selection and gapping is critical for tuned applications to prevent misfires.

Recommendations:

  • -Stock spark plugs: NGK 97506
  • -Gap to ~0.022 inches for tuned applications
  • -Consider upgraded coil packs as an alternative to smaller gaps

Running smaller gaps reduces spark plug service life but helps prevent misfires under boost.

Downpipe & Exhaust

Upgraded downpipes and exhaust systems reduce backpressure and improve turbo spool. Catless downpipes offer the most flow but may cause emissions issues.

Recommendations:

  • -Catless downpipe for maximum flow (off-road use)
  • -High-flow catted downpipe for emissions compliance
  • -Full turbo-back exhaust for best results
  • -3" diameter recommended for tuned applications

Downpipes provide the biggest exhaust restriction relief. A tune is recommended after installing a catless downpipe to prevent CEL codes.
